Treatment for Complex Wounds
Accidents are never part of the plan, but some accidental injuries are particularly traumatic. The on-call plastic surgeons at Dr.STITCH have the experience and skill to handle complex wounds that may need special care to ensure proper healing. If you or a loved one suffers from a deep or jagged laceration, a difficult to repair wound, or an injury that involves more than one type of damage, we can help.
What to Do When Accidental Injuries Occur
Things to know if you or someone you are with suffers an injury involving a complex wound:
- Wash or sanitize your hands before tending to a wound.
- Do NOT remove any objects that are stuck in the body.
- Use a clean bandage or cloth to stop bleeding by applying pressure that is firm and consistent (do not apply pressure to eye wounds).
- Create a tourniquet to staunch bleeding ONLY if you have had training to do so.
- Try to keep the person still or the injured body part immobilized while seeking or waiting for medical attention.
When To Seek Medical Treatment for Complex Wounds
By their nature, complex wounds will always require medical attention. Some signs that an injury is complex and requires immediate treatment include:
- A cut or laceration that will not stop bleeding.
- An abrasion that has torn away underlying tissue as well as skin.
- An object is embedded in the body.
- The location of the wound, or an existing medical condition of the patient, will prevent proper healing.
