Did February school vacation sneak up on you this year? Winter recess is right around the corner and if you still have empty spaces on your family calendar, we can help you fill them with fun activity recommendations from the team at Dr.STITCH! (And if you’re lucky enough to be using the break to travel to a sunny vacation spot, these are also great weekend activities year-round!)
Family Outing Fun
When the whole gang is ready to enjoy some quality time together, check out one of these local spots:
- Have family fun FAST at Karts Indoor Raceway in Ronkonkoma. There is no minimum age to zip around the go-kart raceway, but there are height requirements: Go-kart drivers must be at least 52” tall and passengers with an adult driver must be over 40” tall.
- Enjoy an iconic winter activity with all the delight and none of the winter weather fright. The Oyster Bay Town Ice Rink in Bethpage is an indoor rink that welcomes skaters of all ages and abilities. Check out the schedule and admission fees for details.
- Rock some roller skates! United Skates in Seaford provides a perfect venue for old-fashioned fun and exercise for the whole family. Check their schedule for winter break offers like early bird specials and all-you-can-eat pizza parties.
Live it Up With Little Ones
If the age range in your household is closer to “threenager” than teenager, one of these activities can keep everyone happy:
- Saf-T-Swim Swim now and be safer for summer! This facility, dedicated to teaching swim safety and a love for the water, has instruction for ages 2 months to adult. Locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, including Levittown and East Meadow.
- Cup of Fun Café is an 8,000 square foot indoor playground in Valley Stream that aims to entertain kids with arts and crafts, science experiments, healthy snacks, and engaged play. They offer a 5-star mini-camp during winter recess for ages 4 and up.
- Bounce U, part of the largest network of indoor inflatable party and family recreation centers, lets little ones bounce off that indoor energy with locations in Oceanside and Nesconset. Stop by to check it out during a scheduled all-ages open bounce.
- Elite Gymnastics in Amityville offers a special mini day camp during the winter recess with pre-registration required. Gymnastics camps are available for tumblers ages 3 to 12 and Ninja classes for American Ninja Warrior fans ages 5 to 12.
Spark Self-Discovery
Kids from 5 to 15+ can benefit from using school break time to nurture an interest in the arts or challenge themselves with a new physical activity. Find a new hobby or encourage a current obsession:
- At Modern Warrior in Lindenhurst, kids ages 5 and up can learn practical anti-bullying, anti-abduction and self-defense techniques. Adult classes are available for ages 15 and up.
- Encourage budding artists at the Art Academy of Long Island in Merrick, where kids 8 to 12 can learn to draw from observation using charcoal and advanced artists and teens can take longer classes in oil painting.
- Fire up a passion for pottery at Island Pottery in Mineola. This studio offers youth and adult pottery instruction to help beginner and experienced potters ages 7 and up create usable and sculptural ceramic objects.
- You’re never too young to stretch and practice a little mindfulness! Simplicity Yoga in King’s Park offers special classes for “little warriors”, including Chill Out Kids Yoga, all-ages Kidding Around sessions, and Tween Yoga for ages 10 to 15.
- The team at The Gravity Vault rock climbing gym in Melville believes that “new heights can always be reached, in all aspects of life” and they offer multiple classes for kids aged 5 to 13 in a variety of levels, as well as private group scheduling and adult classes.
